HLG 7 - Ministry of Health: Second World War Special Wartime Functions, Registered Files (LN and other series) and Papers. Evacuation: Regional Officers' Reports.
This series contains files of general correspondence and papers of the Ministry of Health, and other records relating to certain of its wartime functions, from which have been selected the evacuation progress reports submitted to the ministry by its Regional Evacuation Officers.
The files primarily consist of regular reports on the progress of evacuation – both narrative and statistical – submitted by the officers. These are near-daily during the early months of the war, and contained detailed statistical analysis of predicted and actual numbers of evacuees in certain areas, as well as reports on the efficacy of various logistical arrangements. These reports become less regular during subsequent years, but continue to recount a variety of practical and social concerns arising from the reception areas, including complaints about hygiene and behaviour, requests for further provisions, the psychological conditions of children negatively affected by the experience of evacuation, and the general integration of the evacuees into their new surroundings.
