Description

A file of radio broadcast scripts of the B.B.C. radio programme The Kitchen Front between June and December 1940. Subjects discussed in the file include the provision of ration books; the prices of commodity foods; buying advice for consumers, including shopping lists; the issue of food shortages; quick recipes for those in full-time employment; recipes for housewives including soups, pies, puddings, cakes, pastries, breakfast meals, Christmas dishes, and substitute dishes; and methods of saving food, fuel, and labour, including the encouragement of communal cooking. Other subjects covered include the National Milk Scheme for children and expectant mothers; the issues in food preparation caused by air-raids, such as reduced access to cooking facilities; the use of parts of animals and vegetables in cooking that were not ordinarily used prior to the war; the storage and preservation of food; and the use of herbs and spices.
