A file containing documents on the constitution of regional Military Training (Hardship) Committees, regarding the appointment of committee members to deal with cases in which, under the National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939, call-up may be postponed if it would cause extreme financial hardship. Documents in the file include official correspondence on the committees; drafts of letters of appointment and offers of appointment to the committees; an extract from Hansard with parliamentary discussion on the subject; minutes of meetings in which decisions on the matter have been made; and lists of chairmen and reserve chairmen either available or not available to sit on committees. Topics discussed include the procedure for reappointment; the fees liable to be paid to committee members; the appointment of women on committees in light of women being able to request postponement from war services; and the issue of whether or not M.P.s are allowed to sit on committees.
