A file containing documents relating to the appointment of regional Military Training (Hardship) Committees to deal with cases in which, under the National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939, call-up has been postponed if it would cause extreme financial hardship. Documents in the file include official correspondence on the subject; drafts of letters of appointment and offers of appointment to the committees; lists of people appointed, or not available, to serve on the committees; and letters from the public offering their services. Topics covered by the documents include the make-up of and appointments to the committees; instances in which a member of a committee is either enlisted in the forces or engaged in wartime occupations, and therefore cannot serve; responses to invitations for re-appointment; a proposal to reconstitute the committees as Military Service (Hardship) Committees; and feedback from regional offices on suggested changes.
