Description

A file of documents relating to the Civil Defence Services' cooperation with the Mental Health Emergency Committee. Subjects covered in the file include the appointment of a former W.V.S. volunteer as the new regional welfare officer in the London Civil Defence Region; and a proposal for a future National Council of Mental Health that will encompass all the mental health organisations across the country. The file includes a description of the work of the committee, covering the receipt of government grants; the work of the committee's staff, including assistance in rest centres and the subsequent billeting of patients; and the categories of people assisted, including those diagnosed with mental illness, those with less severe issues, epileptics, "nervous" people who cause disruption in air-raid shelters, and those who have received treatment. The file also covers the provision of assistance, including placements in suitable accommodation or institutions, psychiatric examinations, care plans, and investigations into family histories.
