Description

A report on the industry, infrastructure, population, and employment in Herefordshire, produced for Nuffield College's Social Reconstruction Survey in conjunction with the West Midland Group on Post-War Reconstruction and Planning. Topics covered in the report include the geographical characteristics of the county; the make-up of the county's industry; the importance of the agricultural and related food-processing trades; and employment levels in each industry. Other topics discussed include the demographics of the labour supply; the area of influence of each of the main towns in the county in terms of employment; and the provision of public utilities and services, such as education, transportation, and gas, water, and electricity supplies. Further topics covered include a comparison of the county's pre-war and current positions, evaluating the effects of the war; its post-war prospects and suggestions to combat potential problems; and ways to improve the standard of living in the county.
