Description

A report on the industry in Darlington, County Durham, prepared by Mr. Herbert Heighton and Mr. Edward Allen for Nuffield College's Social Reconstruction Survey. It provides an analysis of the industrial situation with consideration of the effects of the industrial demands of war, and attempts to suggest the nature of the post-war situation. Topics covered include a survey of the area in general; the locations and types of industry operating in the area; employment levels and demographics; and the effects on employment of the demobilisation of soldiers and their reintegration into industry. The report includes interviews with industrialists and trade union representatives; a map of the area showing principal towns and transport routes; special reports on Royal Ordnance Factory Aycliffe, with emphasis on its post-war prospects; and official correspondence regarding the circulation of the report.
