A file containing the documents of senior evacuation officers relating to the evacuation scheme in the North East Civil Defence Region. Documents contained in the file include reports on evacuation rehearsals; daily reports on the evacuations as they progressed; a copy of a form to record evacuation statistics; statistical reports on the return home of evacuees; and the proceedings of a conference of representatives from the reception areas of the West Riding. Other topics include billeting allowances; the question of where evacuees should be buried; the treatment of infectious diseases in billets; and whether evacuees should be able to return home for the Christmas holidays. Practical problems on evacuation, such as the requisitioning of premises, the supply of blankets, the repair of war-damaged properties, and the pressure of billeting on public amenities are also considered.
