Description
A file containing the documents of senior evacuation officers relating to evacuation and air raids in the Northern Civil Defence Region. Documents in the file include day-by-day reports on the progress of evacuations from the area; a transcript of a B.B.C. broadcast announcing the evacuation; the proceedings of a conference on evacuation; reports on two air raids in the area; and correspondence between local officials. Other topics covered by the files include the region's pre-war population statistics; statistics comparing estimates and actual numbers of evacuees; military billeting at the expense of civilian evacuee billeting; complaints about evacuees' billets; and the concerns of a bus company over whether it would be economically viable to provide transportation for evacuees. Other topics include problems with the evacuation process, particularly evacuees returning home; the integration of evacuees into the society of reception areas; and the expenditure of the evacuation scheme.
