Description

A file containing documents relating to the government's evacuation scheme, mostly to do with education and aimed at local authorities in evacuation and reception areas. Topics covered include the practicalities of large-scale evacuation; the provision of medical care for evacuees; overseas evacuation to Commonwealth countries; and contingency plans for schools during air raids. Other topics include the closure of schools in the event of invasion; instructions on housing surveys for local authorities; evacuation camps; and the reopening of schools and colleges. Specific documents in the file include Board of Education memoranda on individual evacuation problems; recipes for meals to provide sufficient nutrition for evacuees; train timetables for the evacuation process; and an article from the Times Educational Supplement entitled "Nazi Problems in Education".
