Note by Professor D.M.S. Watson. Early in February 1941 (S.F.C.(41)5) I made an analysis of pig numbers, based on the census figures for the four quarters of the year 1940, in order to predict the future course of supplies of bacon and pork. The method used was a modification of one familiar in fishery research. The conclusion reached was that the number of pigs slaughtered (excluding sows and boars) would be suddenly reduced at the beginning of May to about 55% of the relatively constant rate ruling up to that time.
