averages .398 tons S.E. per acre. The weighted average production of permanent grass as grazing and as hay is .544 tons S.E. per acre on the figures used here. This implies that in pre-war years 73% of the total production of starch equivalent by permanent grass was in fact used. In S.F.C.(41)1 I calculated that during May to August 1940 the utilisation of grass was 77% on the assumption of normal yield; allowing for a reduction of yield equivalent to that estimated for hay it becomes 87%. These figures taken together seem to justify the use of the estimates of yields I have used here; they are at any rate of the right order.
