THE POSITION IN REGARD TO POTATOE STOCKS. Note prepared by Dr. A. W. Menzies-Kitchin.

31 Dec 1940

5. Faced with the possibility of having to dispose of a large surplus of were potatoes at the end of the season the Ministry of Food felt obliged, for the following reasons, to reconsider the position: (a) Growers claimed that if the whole surplus remained on farms until spring they would have neither the labour nor the time to move it; (b) The dislocation of inland transport would make it difficult, if not impossible, to move large quantities of potatoes over a short period; (c) Certain varieties were stated to be deteriorating in the clamp and required to be moved to avoid loss; (a) If fed to cattle without factory processing, potatoes must be available before the beginning of the grazing season; (e) If kept after March they lose weight by sprouting and must be hand picked before marketing.
