RESULTS OF THE PLOUGHING-UP CAMPAIGN, 1939/40. Memorandum by Dr. A. W. Menzies-Kitchin.

5 Dec 1940

5. Taking individual crops substantial increases have occurred in production from oats, barley, mixed corn, potatoes, and kale for fodder, while decreases have occurred in wheat, sugar beet and hay, 6. This result, from the ploughing up of 1,694,654 acrea of permanent and 245,719 acrea of temporary pasture must be considered disappointing and is due (a) to the low crop yields obtained in 1940, and (b) to the disappearance from the Statistics in 1940 of some 280,000 acres of crops and grass. Thi loss is not yet fully explained but in part at least is due to Service demands.
