SLAUGHTER WEIGHT AND MEAT RETURN PER LB. OF DIGESTIBLE NUTRIENTS IN FATTENING CATTLE. Memorandum by Dr. A. W. Menzies-Kitchin.

11 Nov 1940

In the case of the pig the amount of meal consumed per lb. of edible meat fell from 11.92 lb. when pigs were slaughtered at a live weight of 79.26 lb to 7.11 lb. when they were killed as a live weight of 223 lb., and there is reason to believe that the optimum meat/meal ratio would be reached somewhere between 250 and 280 lb. live weight. Therefore, if a specified amount of meal is allocated for pig production the greatest output of edible meat will be obtained by reducing the breeding stock to the point at which they can be maintained and the pigs they produce fed to the above weight on the meal available.
