NOTE ON ACTION TAKEN BY THE MINISTERS OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD WITH REGARD TO VEGETABLES. Prepared by Dr. A. W. Menzies-Kitchin.

23 Oct 1940

"Increases in acreage are considered desirable in the West Country and the Scilly Isles of winter broccoli, spring salads and early vegetables, and in other districts of carrots and onions. There should be a reduced area of asparagus, rhubarb, seakale and culinary herbs. The acreage of other vegetables should be maintained at the existing level". This represented policy up to the loss of supplies from the Netherlands, France and the Channel Islands. 5. When it became evident that supplies from the above countries would not be available a Sub-Committee of the Horticultural Advisory Council assisted by the Director of Fruit and Vegetables of the Ministry of Food was formed to examine the Vegetable situation.
