PRINCIPLES OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN RELATION TO NUTRITIONAL NEEDS UNDER WAR CONDITIONS. Memorandum by the Scientific Committee.

6 Nov 1940

Supplies of labour, and particularly of skilled labour, may limit production; hence the output of the various crops, per unit of labour employed, may require consideration. Cereals give the largest return per unit of labour. 6. Wherever soil and climatic conditions are suitable, and subject to considerations of the seasonal distribution of labour and the requirements of rotational farming, wheat is to be preferred to other cereals. 7. If the maximum returns are to be obtained from possibly limited supplies of phosphatic and almost certainly restricted amounts of potash fertilizers, arable crops should have priority as regards phosphates, and potatoes should have first claim on potash supplies.
