THE REQUIREMENTS, PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND UTILISATION OF VEGETABLES (OTHER THAN POTATOES). Draft Sixth Report.

27 Aug 1940

6. Pulses (peas, beans, lentils and ground nuts) are import###nt because they contain much protein of peculiar value in a mainly cereal diet. The home grown pulses yield more protein, per ac### and per man-hour, than any other common crop. Their production has, however, greatly decreased of recent years. Stocks in hand many of the customary sources of supply have are very been cut low, off. Alternative sources in the Empire might be encouraged to the direct benefit of its agriculture. The bulk of the field peas and beans grown at home are intended for stock food, of these the peas could be eaten by man.
