Home use, including jam making at home 550,000 tons " jams, marmalade etc. 108,000 cakes, ice creams etc. 158,000 " Restaurants 60,000 " Sweets and chocolates 141,000 " Mineral waters 22,000 " Brewing 47,000 " Other uses, such as drugs 10,000 " Total 1096,000 " Rather more than half a million tons a year is required to provide an allowance of 8 oz. per person per week. When the other half million of the total just quoted is allowed for use outside the home there cannot be real hardship, though lovers of sweets will not get all that they have been used to.
