DRAFT NOTE ON SUGAR FOR COMMUNICATION BY THE CHAIRMAN TO THE MINISTER OF FOOD.

30 Jul 1940

real hardship, though lovers of sweets will not get all that they have been used to, There is no need for the elaborate icing of cakes, or the excessive consumption of sweets and chocolates, or the heavy sweetening of tea and coffee. Any excess above the 8 oz. ration that can be spared should be used for making jam at home. It can be said for sugar that, although it provides energy only, it provides that energy cheaply and conveniently. In respect to price, bulk and ease of transport and storage it is as good as wheat but it contains none of the important minerals and vitamins: nor of course does it contain proteins and fats.
