CONSUMPTION AND ACREAGE OF POTATOES. Memorandum by Dr. A. W. Menzies-Kitchin.

22 Jul 1940

6. The above estimates of potatoes available for consumption have assumed that average yields will be obtained from the 1940 crop. Owing to the fact that the crop was late in being planted and to the drought which has been experienced during the summer, it is possible that yields may be below average. This will be particularly the case if the crop is attacked by blight during the next few weeks. On the other hand, some 600,000(1) tons of potatoes on allotments must be added to the farm average in order to complete the total tonnage available for human consumption.
