COLD STORAGE POSITION IN THE U.K. Memo. by Ministry of Food.

4 Oct 1940

(5) Before the outbreak of war, the Treasury was asked to sanction a programme for building new cold stores in what were then regarded as the less vulnerable parts of the country, with a capacity of 12,000,000 cubic feet. The Treasury, however, refused to sanction the building of stores with a capacity of more than 5,000,000 cubic feet, a decision which they reached partly upon the assumption that a further 5,000,000 cubic feet of new space could be made available by acquiring obsolete refrigerated ships and by the adaptation and re-conditioning of existing accommodation.
