the importation of main crop potatoes into England from Northern Ireland, and Scotland, should be prohibited. This could be done by an Order made by the Minister of Food. Importation from Eire should also be prohibited during this period. It would be necessary, of course, to allow by licence in exceptional cases the sale of potatoes for delivery from areas other than the Wash, e.g. if the crop is attacked by wire-worm or blight. Probably a little less than 500,000 tons would be moved into consumption by the end of September, but before that date, stock could be taken of the general position and the matter further considered.
