It is obviously undesirable that we should act so precipitately in this matter (unless conditions make it unavoidable) that many farms now engaged in livestock production should be rendered useless or practically derelict through shortage of animal feed, particularly at a time when much effort and expense are being incurred in bringing derelict or semi-derelict land back into cultivation. 8. Moreover it has to be recognised that the accelerated rate of slaughter of livestock which would inevitably accompany any diversion of oats and vegetables from use as animal feeding stuffs would result in supplies of meat which would have to be eaten whether they were needed to supplement the basal diet or not.
