The price of certain foods (e.g. bread and home-produced meat) has been kept low by subsidies. The price increase of this group of foods between September 1939 and May 1940 was only 8 per cent. Of the unsubsidized foods the prices of some have been controlled by price order and the price increase of this group was only 19 per cent. Of prices no### hitherto controlled the average increase was about 40 per cent. Steps have been taken, or are being taken, to extend price control to the principal foodstuffs falling within this last group.
