3. It is not known how this figure of 2,340,000 acres is arrived at. No figure of 23,400,000 acres appears in the grassland returns for Great Britain except that, by a coincidence, the total area of permanent grass, temporary grass and rough grazings in England and Wales in 1939 stood at about this figure. This particular total, however, has no relevance to the consideration of what grassland might be ploughed up. The actual grassland figures for 1939 in the United Kingdom are as follows (million acres).
