1. FISH SUPPLIES IN WAR TIME. In order fully to appreciate the present position of the fish trade it is necessary to bear in mind the figures relative to production in the year 1938, which was the last complete year prior to the outbreak of war. During that year the total amount of wet fish of British taking landed in Great Britain was 20,913,000 cwts. valued at £16,060,000, an average of 15s.4d. per cwt. Of this total herrings accounted for 5,388,000 cwts. valued at £1,867,000 averaging 6s.11d. per cwt, and white fish for 15,149,000 cwts.
