1. BASAL DIET. The Committee had before them the first report by the Scientific Sub-Committee (Paper No. F.P.(M)(40) 91) on a basal diet as the foundation of food policy. At the request of the Chairman SIR WILLIAM BRAGG summarised the main points in the report. He said that the work of science during the last 25 years had revealed the importance of certain foods generally known as 'protective' foods. As contrasted with the energy giving foodstuffs, which might be compared to the fuel of an engine, the function of the protective foods was to keep the machine running smoothly.
