ACCOMMODATION FOR FOREIGN OFFICE Memorandum by the Secretary of State for India and Burma

1 Jan 1945

It would, in my view, be an offence against historical propriety that the India Office and Burma Office should be evicted from their traditional building and that it should pass into the occupation of the Foreign Office. 4. The importance attached by Parliament to these considerations is illustrated by the provision in Section 172(2) of the Government of India Act, 1935, debarring the diversion of the India Office building to uses not connected with the discharge of the functions of the Crown in relation to India or Burma except with the consent of the Governor-General (which at present means the GovernorGeneral in Council).
