Disposal of Surplus Government-Owned Factory at Site Y. Trafford park, Manchester Memorandum by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade

30 Mar 1946

(b) Proximity to the Docks would greatly increase their efficiency. (c) They would not add materially to local demands for new labour. Those to be employed at Trafford Park (approximately 700) would be transferred - 500 from their existing factory at Newton Heath and the remainder - about 200 from premises in City Road which they have to give up. (d) Their production is important to the Housing Programme and to export (e.g. specialised woodwork for grain milling plant). 4. After a very full enquiry the Regional Distribution of Industry Panel decided to recommend that the factory should be allocated to Evans Bellhouse Limited on the grounds:(1) That expansion in Manchester (and in particular in the Trafford Park area) should be discouraged at present and this firm would add least to local demands for additional labour.
