It 2 will be seen— (i) That at the end of the year total industrial employment was still nearly 2 million below the level of mid-1939. (ii) That in the second half of 1945 unemployment increased by only 182,000. This was followed by an increase of 44,000 in January, which was rather higher than the average rate of increase of the preceding six months, due largely to seasonal causes; January is normally the worst month of the year from this point of view. The February increase will certainly be less.
