LONDON CIVIL DEFENCE REGION. PUBLIC SHELTERS. Progress Report up to 18th October, 1940. Extension of Public Shelter. Since 21st September (the date of the issue of the first circular on the extension of public Shelter) 340 additional basement shelters have been secured, accommodating 65,200 people. This brings the total capacity of public shelters in the Region to 1,324,950 by night, and 1,275,150 by day. These figures do not include the shelter provided by the Tubes, which are referred to in paragraph VIII below.
