THE COAL POSITION IN THE COMING WINTER. Memorandum by the Minister of Fuel and Power

26 Sep 1945

(b) Generally, I anticipate very heavy demands on the mining equipment industry both for the home and export markets. The industry will require additional manpower to keep step with these demands. 6. In the case of opencast production, the bottleneck is civil engineering machinery. I have asked the Service and other Departments to accelerate the release for this purpose of suitable machinery no longer required by them; if this can be effected, the production of opencast coal can be increased above the estimate in paragraph 2.
