FOREIGN TRAVEL. Memorandum by the Chancellor of the Exchequer

5 Sep 1945

###S DOCUMENT IS THE PROPERTY OF HIS BRITANNIC MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT) SECRET COPY NO. 5TH SEPTEMBER, 1945 CABINET LORD PRESIDENT'S COMMITTEE FOREIGN TRAVEL Memorandum by the Chancellor of the Exchequer We must determine our attitude towards foreign travel after the abolition of the Exit Permit system, which I understand will take place about the end of this month. However desirable foreign travel may be, the need for the most stringent economy in foreign exchange is at this time paramount. I was accordingly disposed at first sight to refuse all applications for foreign exchange for travel purposes, save in special cases where the journey could be shown to be in the national interest.
