ABSENCE FROM WORK AT THE TIME OF CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES WITH GERMANY AND THE QUESTION OF A Memorandum by the Minister of Labour and National Service

26 Feb 1945

4. I undertook to the question in the light of these representations. The subject has been discussed departmentally with representatives of other Departments. The conclusions reached were as follows:- (1) The Public Holiday on the occasion of the Cease Fire should be a holiday of one day (in addition to Cease Fire day itself). (2) This day should be the first Monday after Cease Fire if Cease Fire occurs early in the week and the second Monday after Cease Fire if it occurs late in the week. On balance it was felt to be desirable to have a few days' interval to enable preparations to be made but it was desirable that the actual day of the holiday should be announced simultaneously with the announcement of Cease Fire.
