In the course of discussions with the trade it became clear that these proposals would hear hardly on a section of the inshore fishermen who have not been earning the same high rate of profit as the trawler-owners. 9. My Department's proposals were also strongly opposed by the trade unions concerned. The earnings of the fishing crews consist in part of a share in the proceeds of the catch. This share, under an agreement dating from June, 1943, is based on the first hand prices realised. Any reduction in these prices, under the current agreement, falls as to about 70 per cent.
