THE POTATO SUPPLY SITUATION Memorandum by the Minister of Food

18 Jan 1945

7, I appreciate that this step may create some discontent among those producers who have already marketed all or part of their crop, but in View of the urgency of the situation I do not think this can be helped. 8. The cost of the proposed price increase would be about £1,500,000 on the remainder of the crop. It is for consideration whether this should be met by an increase in the present subsidy or by raising the retail price. This is a question on which I have no strong views. The present retail price varies by areas and varieties but averages only about 1d.
