THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL asked the Committee to consider a question affecting the size of newspapers which the Chancellor of the Exchequer had brought to his attention as requiring an immediate decision. THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER informed the Committee that the newspaper proprietors had been authorised by the late Government to place for a sufficient quantity of newsprint contracts from Canada in 1946 and 1947 to make it possible for the size of newspapers to be increased in the autumn of 1945 from four pages to eight pages.
