PRICE CONTROL IN THE TRANSITION PERIOD, 1. THE COMMITTEE had before them a memorandum by the President of the Board of Trade (L.P. (44) 211) proposing that Section 1 of the Goods and Services (Price Control) Act, 1941, should be amended to enable manufacturers' maximum prices to be fixed, not only by order for a class, but also by direction for an individual firm. THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE explained that the existing powers of the Board of Trade under the Goods and Services (Price Control) Act, 1941, empowered the Board of Trade to fix maximum prices only for particular classes of business and not for individual businesses, while the wider powers under Defence Regulation 55 could not be used except where the control of prices formed part of a scheme for the production of utility goods.
