LABOUR FOR THE SUGAR BEET AND POTATO HARVEST: Joint Memorandum by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Secretary of State for Scotland.

7 Nov 1944

9. It is too early to say whether the loss will be substantial. If there are dry spells of weather without frost, there may be no abnormal loss, although the harvests will be prolonged. Even if bad weather continues, the 1083 though grave, will not, we hope, be sufficiently serious to have any marked effect on the national food supply. 10. The gravest aspect of the situation to which we wi### to draw our colleagues' attention is that this year's difficulties over the harvesting of sugar beet and potatoes has resulted in all other farm work (particularly autumn ploughing and cultivations) being seriously behind-hand.
