16 Oct 1944

4. Livestock. Cattle and lowland sheep have done fairly well on the whole and hill sheep are mostly in good condition. In Scotland, especially in lowland areas, the progress of sheep has been retarded and lambs lost condition. 5. Milk. 387,733,000 gallons of milk were sold through Milk Marketing Boards in the United Kingdom in the three months June to August 1944, compared with 397,287,000 gallons in the corresponding months of 1943. Arrangements have been made for the issue of supplementary rations for dairy cows in cases where crop shortages make it impossible for the farmer to reach the necessary standard of self-sufficiency.
