ACQUISITION OF LAND (DEFENCE) BILL. Memorandum by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

18 Apr 1944

(c) To make the three small modifications of the Defence Acts set out in Clause 14 (3) of the printed Bill. (d) To make provision for the acquisition of easements and for the removal of restrictive covenants. The Defence Acts give no power to acquire easements and the absence of this power would in many cases necessitate the taking of more land than would be necessary if an easement could be acquired. With regard to restrictive covenants these do not apply so long as the land is in possession of the Crown and Departments have various powers to get rid of them when it is proposed to sell the land.
