UNOFFICIAL STRIKES. POWERS OF PROSECUTION. Memorandum by the Minister of Labour and National Service.

4 Apr 1944

In this connection there is no definition of a "strike" and presumably the proviso applies to strikes whether or not they are in connection with a trade dispute. 5. In a few isolated cases a stoppage of work may be illegal under Section 1 of the Trade Disputes and Trade Unions Act 1927 and in view of the nature of the recent stoppage of work among apprentices on Tyneside and Clydeside I have felt it necessary to bring to the notice of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Lord Advocate certain evidence with regard to the distribution of leaflets designed to encourage strike action so that it may be considered whether prosecution would be appropriate.
