THE COST-OF-LIVING INDEX IN 1944. Memorandum by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

24 Jan 1944

Coal 0.6 (from 1st February) Gas 1.0 (accruing gradually over six months or more) Clothing 1.2 (accruing gradually through 1944) 2.8 It will be seen that we have to reckon with the probability that by April or May the index will have risen (after making allowance for rounding to the nearest integar) to 101, which is the ceiling represented by the original announcement (and is above the general level at which the index has stood during the last two years) and that thereafter it will rise above that ceiling.
