At their meeting on the 13th December, 1943, the Chancellor of the Exchequer had under-taken to consider whether some modification should be made in the price of other items in the cost of living index, in order to com- pensate for impending increases in the cost of coal and gas. The Committee now had before them a memorandum by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (L.P. (44) 14). THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER said that his Predecessor, in announcing the inauguration of the stabilisation policy in his 1941 Budget Speech, had said he would endeavour to prevent any further rise of the cost of living index number, apart from minor seasonal changes, above the then existing range of 125/130 in terms of the pre-war level.
