INCREASE IN THE PRODUCTION OF BEER. Memorandum by the Minister of Food.

28 Oct 1943

6. I consider it desirable to bring production up to the capaci of all existing plants, and this might result in an overall increa of from 3% to 5% involving the use tons to 37,500 of barley per annum. Not required quantity barley would be needed during the present crop year, and I anticip no difficulty in meeting a demand of this magnitude. 7. In Order to produce men and women would be required in the breweries and 200 men in the maltings. In addition, some 1,750 operatives a year would be nee to fill vacancies throughout the whole industry caused by retireme and death.
