In most cases this is due to lack of local demand, sometimes to the Ministry of Food's collecting because fat stock are brought centre on a different day from that on which the store market is held. 6. There are various reasons for this lack of demand for beef calves such as - (i) The number of suitable buildings available has always imposed a limiting factor on the fattening of cattle in the winter. The ploughing up of grassland has now reduced the area of pasture for rearing and fattening cattle in the summer.
