Milk Supplies in England & Wales. Memo. by the Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries.

21 May 1943

3. It is difficult to estimate the extent to which the yield per cow has fallen owing to war conditions, but on the average the decline is probably between 12% and 15%. On the other hand, much less milk is now being retained on farms for manufacture and livestock feeding and the number of producers selling milk has increased. There are at least 250,000 more cows now producing milk for the market than pre-war. There ae disquieting features about this development, to which I shall refer in the memorandum on livestock production which I propos to circulate to the Committee in the near future.
