Food supplies for East Africa.

27 Feb 1943

to Mombasa. (b) 3,000 tons of tapioca, 3,300 tons of beans, and 2,500 tons of cassava from Madagascar. (c) 2,000 tons of beans from South Africa. It is hoped, in addition, to secure some further supplies of miscellaneous foodstuffs from Madagascar, but that Island's maize crop will not be available until May at the earliest, and the exportable surplus will not exceed 15,000 tons. The recent drought in South Africa, whence it was at one time thought that assistance might be secured, will, it is now feared, mean that there will be no maize available there for export for many months to come.
