Serious labour difficulties in the lifting of the potato and sugar beet crops, and unfavourable weather conditions in some parts of the country, interfered with the autumn cultivations, and when it became apparent that still further emphasis on "bread corn" for the 1943 harvest was needed, Committees were called upon in November for a great effort on the part of all concerned to secure not only the planting of the 25 per cent. increase in wheat and the increased acreages of potatoes and other crops for which they had already been asked, but also an increase of at least 200,000 acres of barley for the loaf, and more if possible.
